About The Presenter:
Matthew Maxey hails from Decatur, Georgia and currently resides in Atlanta. He was born with severe to profound hearing loss and outfitted with hearing aids at 2 years old. He attended public schools and ultimately attended Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., where he learned sign language to balance the struggle of developing his identity as a double minority in terms of disability and race. He founded the ASL Hip-hop organization, DEAFinitely Dope in 2014 and toured with Chance the Rapper on his “Be Encouraged” tour in 2017. Matt uploads content on media platforms, teaches ASL interpretation of music, and provides educational sessions for students and families. Maxey continues to break barriers and defy the norms with a fresh perspective on interaction, inclusion, accessibility and equality.
Transition Tuesday is an activity of the South Carolina Engage for Change team, as part of the National Deaf Center Grant to help raise expectations for students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing.
